In our world, which is increasingly diverse, and where effective communication is essential in all aspects of life, accessibility becomes a fundamental principle: it is the bridge that connects us with the world around us. With this fundamental pillar as a basis, the Ministry of the Interior, through the General direction of traffic, presents the Driving Manual in Spanish sign language.

The initiative of the CNSE Foundation for the Removal of Communication Barriers in the adaptation of teaching material in Spanish sign language is a step towards a more inclusive and accessible world for all.

In the context of driver education, where access to information is essential for personal and community safety, deaf people often encounter significant barriers. The teaching material used, textual or auditory, may be inaccessible to those who depend on sign language as their primary means of communication.

With the Manual Adapted in Spanish Sign Language, the foundation not only ensures that the deaf community has access to the information necessary to obtain their driving license, but also promotes inclusion and equal opportunities in the field of road safety.

Access to adapted teaching material in sign language is not only important from a perspective of equality in access to education, but also has profound implications for the effectiveness of teaching. By adapting content to be accessible to deaf people, their primary form of communication is being recognized and valued. This enhances the educational experience for deaf students, while enriching learning for the entire community.

Practically, the adaptation of teaching material in sign language for driving schools not only involves the literal translation of text into signs, but also requires a deep understanding of the concepts and specific terminology related to driving and road safety. This ensures that content is communicated clearly and accurately, allowing deaf students to fully understand the concepts and procedures necessary to drive safely.

A project that responds to a historical demand by the group of deaf people and, through which, this group will be able to access the content of the manual in their natural language: Spanish sign language. The project materializes in a web page that has its links based on the different content required to obtain the B driving license.

It is a didactic website oriented towards learning, and divided into three blocks: Traffic Rules, Traffic Signs and Road Safety. In each of them, deaf people will find the translation of these contents in Spanish sign language, as well as supporting diagrams and illustrations. Likewise, it has a glossary, also in Spanish sign language, of specific terms related to traffic.

This website supports the driving manual and the classes taught in driving schools, but it is important to highlight that they do not replace them.

The realization of this project has had the involvement of specialists and interpreters in Spanish sign language, as well as accessibility experts from the CNSE Foundation for the Suppression of Communication Barriers, a reference entity in accessibility and standardization of sign language. in Spain.

Likewise, the involvement and adequate monitoring of the technicians from the Training Subdirectorate of the General Directorate of Traffic has been key in its development. This initiative thus marks a turning point in the field of universal accessibility and equal opportunities, which is largely due to the commitment and awareness of the DGT with deaf people.

By ensuring that everyone has access to information, we are helping to create a more just and equitable society.
