In Spain, the access to driving license for people with mild intellectual disabilities It is a process that seeks to guarantee road safety and the inclusion of this group in mobility. To this end, there are general guidelines that regulate this procedure.

First of all, it is essential to highlight that people with mild intellectual disabilities have the right to obtain a driving license, as long as they meet certain requirements. One of the key aspects is the ability to understand and apply traffic rules, as well as to handle emergency situations on the road.

The process begins with the application for a psychotechnical certificate at an authorized medical examination center. This certificate evaluates the applicant's visual, hearing and physical abilities, as well as their general health. People with mild intellectual disabilities, like other driving license candidates, undergo this exam to ensure that they are able to drive safely.

In addition, passing theoretical and practical tests is required. The adaptation of these tests is crucial to guarantee equal opportunities. In this sense, the competent authorities must provide adapted material and facilitate an appropriate environment to evaluate the driving skills of people with mild intellectual disabilities.

Specific training is another essential component, through which applicants must receive a
teaching adapted to their needs, with teaching methods that promote their understanding and learning. To this end, the DGT has initiated projects to improve accessibility to the driving license, focusing on facilitating the process for this group.

From the DGT, various pilot tests have been carried out adapting the questionnaires to the UNE Easy Reading Standard, and they have launched the Permit B manual in easy reading, now available in DGT website and electronic headquarters. Therefore, collaboration between driving schools and professionals specialized in intellectual disabilities is essential to guarantee effective training.

It is important to highlight that accessibility goes beyond legal and technical procedures. Raising awareness among society and professionals in the sector is key to promoting an inclusive environment. And, of course, the promotion of empathy and respect towards people with mild intellectual disabilities contributes to creating a more inclusive road culture.
