The DGT's traffic signs and theory test will change in 2025. We explain what the new traffic signs will look like and what you need to know about the new test.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has decided to modernize both the traffic sign catalog and the theoretical exam, which had not been updated for more than two decades.

If you're in the process of getting your driver's license, pay attention because 2025 is full of important news.

This update aims to adapt to changing times and develop more prepared and safe drivers.

New traffic signs in 2025: adaptation to the reality of the 21st century

On July 1, 2025, the first major update to the traffic sign catalogue will come into force in two decades during which society has made significant progress: transport has changed substantially, new vehicles have appeared (electric scooters, VMP), traffic regulations have changed, and mobility and sustainability needs have evolved.

Society is advancing, and with it, mobility, training, and road safety.

The new signs respond to the new realities of urban mobility.

The main new features in signage:

  • There are specific signs for personal mobility vehicles (PMV): These vehicles will have their own signs, eliminating the current ambiguity. These new signs will prevent confusion among pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter users, especially in urban environments where they all coexist.
  • The pictograms are presented in a clearer and more universal way: The new designs aim for faster and more intuitive reading. Graphic elements are simplified and visual criteria are unified, which will facilitate understanding, even for people with reading difficulties or for foreign tourists.

  • It has an inclusive approach: Gender stereotypes are being eliminated. An example is the classic "pedestrian crossing" sign, which used to depict a man running: now it will be more neutral, or even feature adult figures accompanying children, reflecting diversity and everyday life.

  • New signs for electric charging stations and alternative fuels: These signs will help locate stations compatible with electric and hybrid vehicles, thus promoting greener mobility.

  • Signage adapted to urban living areas: In these areas shared by all, signage will seek to reinforce this balance and mutual respect between pedestrians, cyclists, and different vehicles.

These updates respond to a profound transformation in how we move. Signs must also reflect the present and anticipate the future.

And what will happen to the old signs?

The change, although it will be here soon, will not happen overnight. The DGT has planned a progressive transition: The old signs will no longer be valid from July 2025, but they will be replaced gradually. It is estimated that in one year all signs will be updated.

Changes in the theoretical exam: from memorization to practice

Starting at the end of 2025, we'll be saying goodbye to the traditional theory test. The DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) has decided to shift toward a more practical and realistic system.

The big news: videos of real-life driving situations

The new format will incorporate recorded roadside sequences that will require identifying risks, making decisions, and demonstrating a proper understanding of the rules, not just what has been memorized. The DGT directorate explains the motivation behind these important changes: assess the ability to interpret a real danger situation, and not prioritize memorizing the answers.

This change is focused on future drivers developing a better ability to anticipation, analysis and decision-making, essential skills for safe driving.

What will the new exam consist of?

  • A multiple choice format will be maintained, but with questions based on short videos.

  • Will evaluate the hazard identification, priorities of passage either possible violations in real scenes.

  • It will not only be a matter of marking the correct option, but also of understand the context and react as you would in real life.

How do these changes affect your driving test?

The new signs will begin to appear in the theoretical exams from October/November 2025, at least three months after its entry into force. Driving schools will be prepared for this, with fully updated equipment.

He new exam with videos will be implemented by the end of 2025, and the DGT will communicate the exact dates in advance.

If you are in the process of obtaining your permit, be sure to study with updated material and practice with official drills that incorporate interactive videos.
